like the other two answers said they should be replaced at least every 50 thousand at the most ,look it over real good and if the contact points look burnt or damaged in it just replace it,its not that expensive of an item ,if your in doubt about anything like that just replace it,it saves a lot of aggravation later on down the line, good luck with it.

Tony all you have to do is take a good screwdriver and turn the screws on the cap up and then pull out the cap and with the wires attached carefully check the underside of the cap and you will see any and all of the following trouble signs with the cap.carbon tracks, burned out contacts, burned rotor which should tell you why your car engine is running roughly. It is time for a complete tuneup and everything must be changed all the way down the whole 9 yrds.Do you understand the how/why of tuning up any engine now? Distributor and rotors are replaced every 50K miles , If you see carbon tracks inside the cap then replace it, if you spray water on it and it don't start up then replace it. see if the center stub is worn down. There cheap to replace so save some money and replace it before it leaves you stranded. Good Luck and GOD Bless

Just look at it. If the contacts look worn and burnt then replace them. You didn't say what the age of the car is, but on older cars it was done about every other year, depending on the mileage you put on it. It was considered regular maintenance.
