My fragrant viburnum, which is a tree-form is suckering around the base. Is there any way to stop this so the tree gets all the energy and not the suckers?

Viburnum is a shrub that naturally throws out shoots from ground level and below--they just need to be pruned regularly. They will be better balanced, and make better specimens if you do. When you prune it away, the tree will develop branches at more agreeable places and thus end up with a more desirable tree. That's the nature of the beast, if you will.

1st you dont wont to put a tree form viburnum in a pot it will get root bound and that can kill it the only thing you can do is keep the suckers trimed as close to the trunk of the tree as possible the suckers means that it is still trying to form a bush which is what it was to start with now is the wrong time of the year to transplant trees from the ground to a pot it will throw them into shock .

I have found that placing plants with tendencies to sucker in large plastic potters. Simply dig a hole large enough to insert the potter. Drill a few holes in the potter to allow for the transfer of moisture. Put some gravel in the bottom and place the plant inside the potter. Fill with dirt as needed. The pot hinders the suckering nature of the plant and most plants will not grow larger than the environment will allow. This means the plant will grow until the root system hinders further development.
