You can't get rid of them completely but you can use a treatment that does make a significant difference. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get their top rated ant control treatment; it cost about $20.00. Follow directions.... which tell you to put it out in the morning or late evening. If it rains, you'll have to do it all over again.
The gasoline treatment isn't really effective, it just makes YOU feel good for awhile.

Are they coming into the house? If so, watch them and see where they are entering from. Then put a thin strip of baby powder(talcum powder) in front of that entrance. The ants won't cross the powder.
If you make a straight line they will follow the line and go around it, so make sure that it is in like a semi circle or put down in a way that there is no break in the powder. You do not need a lot of powder (thin strip).
After a few days, they will stop even trying to come in. In the meantime, they won't cross the line.
This worked great for me
Good Luck

I will give you my way of getting rid of ants...old fashioned grits work well. Yes, I said grits. Just sprinkle some on the mound after you open it( make sure you do it carefully). Check back in a day or two. It works great here in NC, so hopefully it will work for you too!

put a cup of gasoline on the pile... it kills them almost instantly... because it soaks down in the dirt, and the fumes suffocate them... and it is toxic to them... you can also light it on fire if you want... it is fun to watch them crackle and pop...
Although be warned that when doing this, the dirt where that pile was, probably wont have any grass or plants living in it for a while... because gas also ruins dirt, it makes it unstable for plants to live in... but you can put a bunch of soil treatments in it to fix that...
I recommend only using about a cup of gas, and that should do the trick, and then in a few minutes, you can shovel out the contaminated dirt and stick it in a trash can or something... and that solves your soil problem...

gasoline on the ant pile always works, or you can soak a sugar cube in gas and put it somewhere.
