I don't know where to look, who to talk to, what to ask, what to include, etc. All I can think of is going to Best-Buy, but there's got to be some better options. What kind of numbers should I look for (RAM, Hz, Memory, etc.)? Please help me find a bad-*** gaming machine!

Depends on your budget, Alienware, Dell XPs have been tops with gamers. Most important in gaming is to get a top dedicated graphics card. The new Dell 1520 can be ordered with a NV8600 GT, with 4 GBs of RAM and a 160 HD, it might be the best choice for you.

Here is what I'd recommend, you won't be disappointed.

RAM – Get 4 GB. 1 GB is about what most typical users are getting right now, you'll need more. You also want to get a motherboard that will support FAST memory. You’ll want something that will support DDR2 memory. I would be looking at 800MHz or faster will work well.

Video Card – This is probably the most important thing you’ll need for gaming. I personally only use nVidia cards, but I know people that like their ATI cards. I believe that the XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra is the best graphics card they are making right now.

Processor – Don’t look at the GHz anymore. There was a time when GHz was a good way to measure the speed of a processor. With the new architectures, you’ll want to look more at benchmarks. Core 2 Extreme x6800 is a sweet processor, however if you’d rather go with AMD then you should look at the Athlon FX-74

I recommend picking up a copy of PC Magazine and/or Maximum PC. Both will give you a lot of info on the subject.

You can also visit HP's website and check out some of their latest products. I recommend HP over Dell and Gateway, though Best Buy's Alienware is pretty sharp too.

You're going to want a minimum of 2GB of RAM these days, especially when running Windows Vista. Don't concern yourself about the MHz or GHz rating. It's quite misleading these days. Just be sure to grab any Core 2 Duo processor with a high-end video card if gaming performance is a big concern.

You can build it your self for less or you can get one made from places like http://alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Area-51_ALX/area-51_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-AREA51-ALX-R6&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

Question really is what do you expect from this pc. How much $$$ your willing to spend. Just for xsample:

No lower that a intel Core2 1.86
no lower that 2GB of ram DDR2 800 but 3GB if running Vista.
No lower that GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
As for motherboard that you would have to find out what options you need like if your going to run dual video cards, do you need firewires how many HDD you need and so on. All this could be pick up at newegg.com

If you really have a lot of money to waste go to alienware but expect to spend 1500 at least up to 5200. Dell lets you customise your pc. If you put about how much you can spend then I can find the pc for you
