I am thinking about going into the law profession.
I think I will specialize in family and school law.
I really want to be able to live confortably with my family, and be able to provide for them.
Is a lawyer a good career choice?

I am not a lawyer and never went to law school. But, I know many lawyers and most do not practice law. This is what they told me...as best as I can remember...

Most told me that they knew after the first year of law school that they did NOT want to be full time lawyers. Amazing! Since they also completed their schooling and also went-on to take their bar exams.

There are more lawyers that do not practice law, than do. The same probably goes for doctors too - they slave through medical school, do their internships and residencies, and then decide, "This is not what I want."

If you want to practice law, you will most likely have to work for a law firm. Be prepared to do all of the grunt work. The "partners" in the firm are the ones that sit back and make the big easy money. You will be treated with less respect thant he paralegals. The pay is pretty good, but the hours are long. A funny thing about law firms is that they seem to have invented the 36 hour day. That is to say, when you look at their billable hours (how they charge clients) it seems like one attorney is able to work 3 cases in the same time frame.

About the best legal positions you can get are as a corporate attorney. Those people generally farm-out all of the real legal work to other law firms. They are mostly just conduits for the business. It's like, "Hey Sally. What do you think of this? I want to get your approval on this contract before we move foward." The answer is usually, "Ok, let me take a look at it and get back to you later this week." (In other words, let me send it over to the real lawyers at the law firm that we use, have them charge us $200 an hour for a paralegal to look at it, and give me their thoughts so I can give you my thoughts."
