It means get the HELL out of there!!! It's a sign!
Obviously there is no communication happening, the noise helps break the awkwardness and so it's time to move on!!!

No. If you're in the moment and BANG some idiot's muffler backfired - or your baby starts crying - kills the mood...

Not when it comes to my peace and quiet. I hate it when I'm finally getting into a deep sleep and then someone turns on the bright light or starts making noise that seems to wake me up.

I'm a big fan of peace and quiet. I would love to live outside of the big city I live in and just live peacefully in some quiet place for the rest of my life. Maybe I'll look into being a hermit. =)
