Mimi does 'die'... but only for a moment. While all of her friends are surrounding her and Roger (who has finally finished writing his song) sings to her, she miraculously comes back and she tells her friends that she saw Angel who told her to go back and listen to Roger's song.

Rent is based on the opera La Boheme in which Mimi dies in the end. In Rent, Angel dies but Mimi lives. I've long assumed this was to give the audience a happy ending, which is the norm for musicals with rare exceptions (ex. West Side Story).

The movie kept the same ending as the musical - Mimi dies and then comes back to life claiming that she saw Angel.
However, in the opera La Boheme, which Rent was inspired by, Mimi does actually die.

In the actual musical she still lives. But in the show La Boheme (which Rent is based off of) Mimi dies in the end.

well, yes and no. she dies, but does come back to life claiming that angel told her that it wasen't her time. the man who wrote the show, Jonathan Larson wrote the musical for his friends and the people all around the world suffering during the aids epedimic. he wanted the musical to be about how living with a disease isn't like reciving a death sentence. mimi "almost dies" as it is sometimes put, but lives on. It was jonathan's idea to not follow up on the ending of la boheme (the basis for rent's plot), in wtich mimi really dies, but to end the show with life.
i love it.
*sorry, i'm obsessive.

No, she does NOT die. Many Rentheads and Broadway aficionados alike believe that perhaps it would have been a better ending had Mimi died because people simply think it's unbelievable/a cop out. However, had Jonathan Larson lived to see the opening of the show on Broadway, he wouldn't have changed the ending. According to cast members and people who were close to him, Jonathan "wanted the show to end with life," not with death. So, the ending is as Jonathan would have wanted.

Yes and no...according to Mimi she saw angel which would lead you to believe she was dead but rogers song brought her back to life....she died but didn't stay dead :) even in the Broadway production (which I have seen many times) she comes back to life after dying.
