don't talk bigger or try to ride bigger than your ability
if you're new you will be a squid no matter what. accepting the fact that you're a squid is the first step of evolving from squidliness

Take the time to learn how to RIDE, not just twist the throttle, and wear proper gear, not just a helmet with your T-shirt & shorts.
There is nothing quite like hitting your braking point and smoothly leaning into a fast corner before gunning it off of the apex. It's a lovely ballet dance of physics and skill, and is SO much more rewarding than just going fast.
Just don't be stupid, and don't ride over your ability level on a bike that is also beyond your capacity to control. And for f*ck's sake, wave at other riders as you pass, no matter what they're riding. We're all in this together after all.

what rider i call a squid, those in: flip flops instead of boots, shorts instead of at the bare minumum, jeans. instead of at least a textile/mesh jacket, they're in a muscle shirt...i've actually seen those in bikini's riding, and no gloves. they'd have a full face helmet, but very little else.
gettin stupid on the street in heavy traffic is a definate sign of squids. real riders respect the road and traffic conditions. if u want to drag a knee, do it on the track, not on the dragon....any sportbike on the dragon bein a moron i call a squid reguardless; they go down, it brings heat from the cops on all riders.

Start out with a 250/500cc bike and learn how to ride. The better skills and experience obtained this way primes you for riding professionally on higher hp motorcycles. Just respect others on the road.

DO wear a helmet and jacket
DONT wear a replica helmet from your favorite racer and replica leathers on the street.
DO ride smoothley in your lane, and obey the speedlimit
DONT ride wheelies as fast as you can down interstate while having your friends videotape
DO maintain your bike and keep it in good working order
DONT put on the loudest slipon you can find saw off your rear fender/license plate mount, and belive that has made you faster.
DO ride safe.

Having been the type of squid that kavekarst mentions, and carting those mudpuppies around the world, I'll say you should stay UPwind.

Members of the USMC refer to seamen as 'squids' so the best way to avoid that label is not wearing Navy Uniforms
and hide the military hair style under a 'cycle helmet. Stay downwind of USMC just to be extra safe.

Don't assume you are a roadrace star. If you are a roadrace star you would be sponsored by a big company and would have nothing to improve on the public road.
