What is wrong with the double layer DVDs I'm burning?

I download video from some news groups. For the 4.7GB DVDs, I burn them and they work fine in my DVD players. But when I burn 8.5GB double layer DVDs, my DVD players don't recognize them.

What could I be doing wrong?

I know that, sometimes, my player doesn't recognize the DVDs either, because the writing rate was to high. Try asking this question in a different category.
