why is one so much cheaper than the other? is there really a differance in the quality of steel? first shop is just one shop and was at first charging 200.00 then dropped it to 160. second shop is a chain. anyone who worked in muffler shops and know why? is it the quality of the steel. im not talking stainless. only steel.

It could be the cost of delivering the parts (fuel prices are screwing everything up) it could be a different distributor, and it might simply be the cost of labor. If you have a master mechanic and welder on site, you may have to charge more to keep them on staff. Some places charge more simply because they don't get as much business. The chain store may do twenty to thirty mufflers every day, while the local place may only do five to ten. The more mufflers you do, the less you have to charge per unit.

Your'e gettin' hustled by the single store. That's it. Exhausts are EASY to put on, don't let them try and say they do a better job. Seriously, it's like me saying I open a jar better than you. Get the cheaper one, steel is steel is steel.

The quality of workmanship is higher at owner operator shops, and therefore costs a little more.

Personaly, I'd go to the local guy....not the chain store.

Fifty bucks....that's all. If the place is reputable and you see their work, go for it. Not rocket science.
