if the question relates to a gearshift lever that won't come out of Park on an automatic transmission, then check to see if your brake lights work when you step on the brake. If the brake lights don't work, the shifter won't come out of park because the interlock system doesn't know that you have your foot on the brake (that is required to take the car out of park). It is common for the brake lamp switch under the dash to fail and cause that problem. If it is the brake lamp switch, its usually about $50 to have someone replace it or you can buy the part and do it yourself to save some labor.

Are the shift fork(s) bent in the trans ?
