My son is so upset; he knows now we should have taken it to the river to let it go, but it is too late tonight. Now he believes that the turtle, "Sandwich," will die overnight.

What do you think?

Painted turtles swim in water that is 60 degrees, so the 70 degree room will be fine for him/her. Tell your son not to worry. :) p.s. you could shred some newspaper in the box if there is a cold draft to help make your son feel better too.

Drop some lightly wadded newspaper or paper towels in the box to give it a place to dig into and it will be fine for a night.

Please do not do the bathtub idea (very cold for the turtle, lots of Salmonella risk for you), and most of the other ideas are just too complicated for a single night.

By the way, release it close to where you found it, usually still or slow-moving water, if possible.

The turtle, as long as it's healthy, will be absolutely fine. Tell your son not to worry. My niece once put my box turtle in 2 feet water in the basement sink when we were just moving in. He was probably in there for 5 hours and when we found him he was floating and was just fine. Turtles are pretty tough creatures. Just make sure the painted turtle gets back to his natural environment as soon as possible so he can get on with his life. ;)

The turt would survive fine overnight, but as someone suggested, might be more comfortable in a bit of water. During moves or really cold, rare nights, I've had my turts in a bathtub temporarily and they do just fine.

maybe he could put him in the bathtub without the bx in a TINY bit of water!
also I know it is late now but maybe you could go out to your yard/driveway /and get some gravels to put in the tub too?

I hope he will be okay ,then mor you can release him to the river!
