He went to the hospital and all, but didn't get a cast. He just has on some rapping suff and a suporting thing. But the hand is swelling up like a ballon for some reason. Is this normal? How does he reduce the swelling?

Ice it. Even if he needs a cast, the swelling has to go down before they can put one on. That may be why they only put on a splint.

First of all: They probably didn't put him in a cast at the hospital because they want him to see an orthopedist/orthopedic surgeon - they will cast his hand
Second of all: I am assuming that he has a wadd of gauze in his hand, and an ace bandage wrapped around his hand and wrist (this is what the hospital did to my mom when she broke her hand)

To get the swelling to go down wrap his hand with an ice pack, and have him take some ibuprofen. He should be okay until any follow up appointment he has with an orthopedist (please tell me he has one).

Hope this helps. :-)

I think he just needs to ice it and if it gets worse get to the hospital right away. Good luck hope he will be ok mail me on the results.

any bone break causes lots of swelling and skin color looks very bad, purplish. unfortunately, its normal. ice packs and aspirin, ibuprofen, Tylenol helps reduce swelling

No! Not at all. Go back to the hospital, he could have made the fracture worse, somehow, it if wasn't properly set.
