I already did a virus scan and got rid of everything that came up...what could be the problem?

It sounds as though you have spyware on your computer.
If I were you, I would avail myself of the free trials of some really good anti-spyware programs such as CounterSpy. It is far more powerful than any free software out there.
Try their free 15 day trial of the full system and see what it picks up.
It cannot hurt to try and unlike anti-virus programs, you can run more than one anti-spyware program on your computer.

Besides being hijacked and having spyware IE is a pain to get rid of those download firefox and use their browser instead of IE. It is more secure and has more functions

Sounds like your web browser has been Hijacked. Perhaps try running Hijackthis and remove anything suspicious:
