Fully charged battery 400 Amp Hour battery can sustain a load of one side marker bulb for 400 hours. Or about 30 minutes 15 amp coil ignition and 5 amp fuel pump and injectors. turn on the 10 amp head lights about 10 to 15 minutes. Don't run modern cars with out alternator or good charging system because the radio and other computer controlled things can fail if they are forced to run with less than 11 volts. Your normal voltage is 13.8 to 14.8 volts...

When alternators quit, they quit. As for how long the car will continue running, it varies from car to car depending on the battery. If you look at the tag on top of your battery, you will see a bunch of numbers. CA and CCA are cranking amps and cold cranking amps. These numbers represent the amount of power the battery will deliver to start the engine. The third number is reserve capacity. You will notice that the number is in minutes. 80, 120, 240, etc. Under ideal conditions, all accessories off, headlights off and brakes applied for 1 minute every 30, the number under reserve capacity is how long the engine will run until the battery cannot continue supplying power to the ignition system and the engine stalls.

Jim,
The draw will depend on how much your system draws when each cylinder fires. How big the battery is will also be a part of the equation. I think if you have a magnito you don't need a battery to run on but will need an auxzillary starting system. In short there is no guarrantee how long your car will run without an alternater there are too many variables of wear clearances and supporting systems to calculate.

About an hour. If NOTHING else is on.

You neglected to say what kind of car so I have no idea.

1996 Honda Civic?
2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty Truck?

Depends on vehicle and battery condition. If it's a newer vehicle with a electric fuel pump ( fuel injected ) AND it is during the day ( no lights used ) I have seen 2 hours...and I have seen 15 minutes. It's a real toss up...sorry I couldn't be more specific.

the car will run till you turn it off. the alternator isn't necessary for the engine to run, the engine runs on direct current which it makes on hits own, but once you turn it off the battery will drain and not work

depends on the vehicle... the older stuff could run quite a while, because there was no computer or fuel pump to run, but the newer vehicles have a lot more electrical stuff to run, so the battery wouldn't last as long
