I am unable to connect to the proper network/access point provided by my Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway that is a modem/route/usb/4-port switch provided by Comcast.

The thing is, about 2 days ago, it was fine in connecting to the proper network wirelessly, meaning I could take my new HP laptop with integrated WLAN and HP Wireless Assistant for up to at least 25 yards with a satisfactory signal. The thing is, now I am unable to connect to the proper network I want unless I connect an ethernet cable from the cable gateway.

I do not have more than 5 connections, my ps3 cannot connect to said network as well which it used to on a daily basis, I had already setup the network with proper WEP encryption. Also, I have placed my laptop literally adjacent to my cable gateway so there shouldn't be any signal problems.

I have noticed is that the strongest signal to the list of connect to networks is named "Customer ID" which is not the network I want to connect to. Any suggestions?

Also, I run on Windows Vista, so I'm not exactly familiar with the format (I used Win2000 before) and most help forums I've been to require changes in which I knew how to access the proper areas.

I will probably ask Comcast for some troubleshooting issues, but for now it's not a dire situation, but I would like to get it fixed.

I'm not completely computer/tech savvy yet I'm not completely clueless so please offer any advice.

Also, the wireless blinker on the Cable Gateway is marked as on, so my best guess at the problem is that someone may have hacked onto my network and changed it or whatever. However, my network was secured with a WEP encryption.

That's about all I think would help in resolving this question, please don't hesistate to ask any other question in order to fix this problem.

First try resetting the router. They sometimes just hang for no reason. they are computers after all. Just unplug it and wait one minute then reconnect power wait till it settles into working mode and see if you can connect.

If there is an interfering signal, login to the router and change channels (the defaults are usually 1, 6, 11) if you are on say channel 1 change it to 11 and see if it works better.

Wifi is radio and any thing that can cause radios to conflict will affect wifi. like another unit on the same channel that is close.

Linksys default login is
http://192.168.1.1 you should have the username and password for it. Once logged in you can click on the wireless section.. check the SSID change it to one you know dont leave it linksys.. change the channel off of 6 to 11 or 1 and see what happens.

2.4 Ghz or Microwave can slow down your computer. Try to upgrade some of them to the latest versions.

If you just bought a new laptop, then make sure that your laptop and the wireless router have the same type. If the router is G, then your laptop must be G, too.

Or, the router might be getting hotter, Try to cool it down, the power it.

Good Luck
