I once had one in the Stoneham Savings Bank. When I canceled it they told me I owed $10 because I had not kept it open for a year. I have canceled a lot of accounts when I was trying them out to see if I liked the bank and could use them to replace Bank of America that I do not like. That is the only one that ever charged a cancellation fee.

Your question is very broad. Some banks will charge to cancel your accout during a certain time. Ive seen it happen before but your branch manager can waive the fee if there was one. Normally they will want to know why you cancel but sometimes there are really good reasons.
One bank I worked for they did charge depending on agreement. 99% of the people didnt care. If they called and asked it was just waived. I didnt have time to debate over 10-15 bucks.
Just call if you are charged and talk to the manager.

Not for canceling, but make sure all the checks you have written on that account have cleared the account or else they will bounce and you'll have a record in the Chex system.
