If it has an interference engine, you can drive your pistons into the valves left open by the camshaft not turning. It can be quite expensive to repair. It's a lot cheaper to change the timing belt on schedule, before it breaks.

Maa'm When a timing belt breaks you are inviting some serious valve train damage the valves may bend then break and then comes the engine overhaul people who will tell you that the entire engine is damaged beyond repair, timing belts have to be very closely watched and changed at least every 60,000 miles,oh my another headache and worry to be worried about ,gotta hate those timing belts just like the days of the old ford pintos and chevy vegas ofyears ago. .

these motors are called interference motors, that means the valves in the head can hit the pistons and bend if the timing belt breaks,if you were traveling at any kind of speed it is very likley.it is best for a trained mech.to tackle that job because it is crucial that the engine is timed right.

that car doesn't have an interference engine in it,so it shouldn't have any major damage to it,other than replacing the timing belt and tensioner in it,id buy whats called a timing kit,it comes with everything needed do to do the job right, this way you don't wind up having to by these parts individually, good luck hope this helps.

only the belt unless it wraps around something and pulls another part off too, the valves are made to clear the pistons just so you do not smack the pistons on the valves when that does occur

Valves get bent, valve guides usually crack as well. You are looking at replacing the cyl head or have it rebuilt.
