Well, the most important thing to expand musical ability of a group is a good solid knowledge, and practice thereof, of music theory. All instruments in western music, (aside from percussion, in which their rhythmic principals are still applicable to all other instruments across the board), are related in that they all are based around the same12 tones: C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, and B.

The biggest advantage to learning other instruments is the ability to think from a different perspective. A pianist and guitarist do not think or phrase the same when improvising on their respective instruments. Guitarists usually think more in linear terms, scale wise, as well as in fourths, due to the instruments' tuning. Pianists are usually taught to stack thirds, (major or minor), and octaves when creating melodic lines.

Of course, the ultimate goal of the free thinking and pure creative musician is to separate himself from the confines and mechanics of the instrument, and create music purely from the mind, heart, and soul. Learning theory, playing other instruments, and intently listening to how other players, (regardless of instrument or genre), improvise, phrase, and harmonize, will lead down that path of pure music.

Not unless they incorporate it into the main music..

Well Steven obviously if the band knows more instruments it broadens their music ability.

However, the question is, WHO CARES IF A HEAVY METAL GUITARIST CAN PLAY VIOLIN? Or if a DJ can play the Sax? It's not about what ELSE they can play unless they INCORPORATE IT.

Like dude said earlier.

***///STEVEN I have listened to so much black metal dude I am aware of the orchestral aspects of alot of it... I LOVE IT.

OF COURSE IT'S BETTER WITH MORE INSTRUMENTS, BUT, I'M SAYING- It makes no difference unless THEY USE IT.

Perhaps, being a multi-instrumentalist shows your ability, but not quite necessarily of the band. The ability of the band would be extended only if each and every member were virtuosos on their instruments.

I don't know if it extends the ability of the band, but it sure extends the ability of the musician.
