let cost of a book be x cents and that of a magazine be y cents.

4x + 3y = 145 ..... (1)
2x + 5y = 125 ..... (2)

(2) * 2 -----> 4x + 10y = 250 ..... (3)

Subtract (1) from (3),

4x - 4x + 10y - 3y = 250 - 145
7y = 105
y = 15

Put y = 15 in (2),

2x + 75 = 125
2x = 50
x = 25

x = 25, y = 15

The price of a book is 25 cents and the price of a magazine is 15 cents

Let the price of 1 book be $b and the price of 1 magazine be $m.

4b+3m=1.45 -----(1)
2b+5m=1.25 -----(2)

(2)x2
4b+10m=2.50 ----(3)

(3) - (1)
7m= 1.05
m = 0.15
b = 0.25

(1) 4b + 3m = 1.45
(2) 2b + 5m = 1.25

Multiply (1) by -1 and (2) by 2 and sum:

-4b - 3m = -1.45
4b + 10m = 2.50
------------------------
7m = 1.05
m = .15

Substitute .15 for m throughout, and solve for b. b = .25

Books are 25 cents, magazines are 15 cents.

4b + 3m = 1.45
2b + 5m = 1.25 ==> 4b + 10m = 2.50, or
7m = 1.05, so m = .15, and therefore b = .25

4x+3y = 1.45 ... (1)
2x+5y = 1.25 ... (2)

(2)x2 - (1) : y = 0.15, x = 0.25
