Buy Backstage Newspaper. It is on the NYC newstands every Thursday. It lists auditions in Manhattan and other boroughs. You can also look at online at: Stop looking in the voice. If you don't know how to find something ask an actor friend. If you don't have an actor friend, ask your acting teacher.

You do not pay an agent to find you work. They take a percentage of your earnings. Calls for extras are quite often posted in theatrical/film/TV publications, both paper-base and on the web.

Some theatrical agents specialise in extras, some do more. At the same time, an agent may not give you a listing as such. They will tell you what is going in terms of what they think you might be able to get. That said, it is not true for all good agents. Some will do whatever they can for you, if they think you are worth the effort.

The trick is showing that you are worth the effort. Getting an agent itself is not the end of the hard work. You still have to prove yourself. Finding out about possible jobs on your own back and asking the agent to look into them shows you are keen, and that you trust them to make a valid judgement call.

Most important, don't give out your credit information unless you have ablsolute confidence in the contact requesting them. Even then, I would be reluctant. Let's face it, do you pay when you apply for a job as a cleaner? No. Neither should you here.

I agree, backstage is a great newspaper.
But no you shouldn't have to pay anything, the only thing you will need to purchase if you don't have already are headshots. It's the agents job to find you work and they will take a precentage of what you make. NO agent should ever ask for money for anything unless it's for headshots.
