In the U.S., travel by car is usually more convenient than public transportation because of the low housing density of cities. If people mostly lived in high rise apartment buildings like New York, they could easily and cheaply be served by public transportation such as subways. If everyone lives on quarter acre lots scattered all over suburbia, it is impossible for public transportation to be convenient.
One of the biggest mistakes in urban planning is to encourage houses on large lots. Some governments require large lots because they think that a low population density will mean less demand on schools, utilities, and other government services. In fact, this only leads to gobbling up huge amounts of farm land for houses and huge traffic problems because everyone has to drive long distances to go anywhere.

I'm into getting there or wherever. Sometimes public transport is convenient and sometimes not. Make transport so difficult as to be difficult to get on a plane... heck, I'll drive. Make driving more of a hassle than flying, I'll fly. I now have to travel several thousand miles. I may fly or go by train or bus. Driving is out of the question due to the inconvenience of driving that distance. Sometimes time is a convenience and sometimes, like now, doesn't really matter.

Personal transportation is more convenient because you decide when and where to go. You can travel according to your own schedule and you can make stops whenever and wherever you want. However, public transportation is usually much cheaper, especially you don't have to pay for gas. Also, you don't have to wear seatbelts in public transportation, so you feel cool!
Hope that helped.

1. Private transport is quicker.
2. Because you can go directly to your destination, rather than travel around the sidestreets of all the suburbs in that run.
3. You'll always get a seat in your own vehicle!
4. You don't have to put up with undesirables

you drive straight from your driveway to your parking space at your office - no walking, no rain, no rushing, no pushing by other people, no queue to buy tickets/catching public transports, no pick pocketing, no delay, no one sneezing/coughing on you, no smoke, no long time standing up etc..
