I would go at the end of August through the end of September at least, if you can take that much time. My husband and I did this and we had 8 weeks and it wasn't enough time. We had to come for Thanksgiving. Things you must see:
Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park both Utah.
The Badlands and Wall Drug Store in South Dakota.
Devils Tower in Wyoming, I would skip Yellowstone, but that's me. I've been there 3 times and it's completely overated. Although the Grand Tetons are gorgeous.
All of the historical stuff in Philadelphia.
Churchill Downs in Kentucky if in you're into horses.
Napa Valley and Golden Gate Bridge in California.
The Alamo in Texas.
New Orleans in Louisiana but be careful, crime is up again.
All of the museums and monuments in DC.
Graceland and the rest of Memphis.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
The list is endless. Have a great trip, it should be the best vacation of your life.

I'll keep it simple, since I don't know where you'd like to start and finish the trip.
The big cities have much to offer, and so do the national parks. Everyone should see the Statue of Liberty, the White House and Capitol, the French Quarter in New Orleans, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley, Disneyland or Disney World, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc. It's hard to go wrong.

You need to see Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. It would be best to go there in the summer when its not freezing and more wildlife is out. If you want shopping go to Jackson Hole. The Tetons are the perfect picture and really amazing to see. Yellowstone is awesome and definitely not overrated. Sure it may be crowded during July, but its definitely worth it. You just need to know where to look. The scenery is amazing and the geysers are so cool. The wildlife is just great, grizzly and black bears, wolves, moose, bison, and elk just to name a few. Its a place you need to go and will never forget.

Drive to the top of Pike's Peak in Colorado, it offers a beautiful view....
The Fort Restaurant in Morrison, Colorado (west of Denver) has lots of interesting things on their menu (i got the game platter which was buffalo, elk & quail) - it was a very western menu, but worth the trip.
Maybe stop by in Vermont (I used to live there) in the fall it is beautiful, go to Waterfront Park to view Lake Champlain or visit downtown Burlington, Church Street has lots of little shops & interesting restaurants. My personal favorite is Red Onion its a great little sandwich shop.
I would also make a trip to Virginia - lots of history no matter where you go, either up to Washington DC to see the white house, smithsonian, go to Mount Vernon (home of George Washington),etc. or go to Williamsburg/Jamestown/Newport News, more history and a short distance to the beach. Or go out to Charlottesville area where Thomas Jefferson used to live as well as James Monroe. Visit the Jefferson Vineyards.
I would say definately go see Yosemite, Grand Canyon and all of that... maybe even drive up Route 1 in California up the coast.... I haven't done these few here, but are on my to do list...

New England in the fall. NH, Maine,VT. The 1st through the 3rd weeks in Oct. depending upon the weather. You can not get better fall colors anywhere in the states. The other NE states have the colors also but you don't have to deal with city traffic up north.
