the knob is turning but its not catching internally or something cuz the door isn't opening. taking the door off its hinges really isn't an option. i've got the cuff of the knob removed but not much of the internal fixings are visible. i've tried jiggling between the door and frame. i've even given it a few whacks with the hammer. i've tried the obvious stuff. i'd hate to bring the door down. is there a magic hairpin trick? there is no keyhole or locking mechanism on the door. both sides of the knob are smooth with no holes of any kind.
i can go around the house to get to the other side of the door. however, its getting dark quickly and i'm single. (eek!)

i don't mind ruining the doorknob at all. how would i squeeze it? what happens when i squeeze? will it fall apart? i have a small assortment of basic tools available.
i'm not outside actually. i'm in a separate part of the house. my son is on the other side. like i already said, i can get to the other side if i walk around the house. however, i live in a secluded area and its kinda spooky. lol

If the lock is relatively modern (like a Quick-set lock), there should be 2 screws visible in the round metal plate where the doorknob attaches to the door. They hold the whole thing together. If they are not on the side of the door you're on, you will need to get to the other side, when you unscrew them, the knob assembly will pull off and the knob on the other side will probably fall off as well (so put a rag or something under it if the floor might get marred). Now there will only be the latch mechanism left (you'll see the end of it sticking into the hole in the door where the knobs came off). You will need to try to open the latch. There should be a part with a small hole that, by turning, activates the latch to open it; it will be centered in the ~2" dia hole of the door where the knobs came off. It might be square, a slot, or a sort of C-shaped hole etc depending on the brand of the lock. Usually, sticking a screwdriver in the hole and turning (either direction) will release the latch (remember to pull/push the door while releaseing the latch). If this doesn't release the latch, it is broken or jammed internally. You will resort to other means; you said the credit card trick didn't work, try a jack knife, or a flat-blade screwdriver, see if you can shove the latch back with minimal destruction. Remember when doing this, you should be on the side of the door where the strikeplate is, and the rounded side of the latch is at the back;(facing away from you) you will need to reach behind it and pull towards you to release it. If you can't do it this way you are going to have to drive the hinge pins out (yeah, I know you said it was too hard); try placing a flat-blade screwdriver just under the head of the hinge pin and striking upwards with a hammer to drive them out. The door may immediately fall out of the frame so be carefull; you may have to pull it loose by grabbing the part of the hinge that is hooked onto the door with a pair of pliers. I hope this helps.

Okay I have see this many times before. The latch (the springy part that comes out the edge of the door) is broken. (cheap Chinese lock) Take a flat blade screwdriver and a hammer, tap the hinge pins out, and pry the door out from the hinge side. Replace the lock with a better grade lock. The lock screws are on the other side of the door (according to the picture provided) If you feel uncomfortable doing this, call a local Locksmith. He/She will be able to remedy this in short order, at a minimal cost!

The hammer is only going to make it worse. I have used channel locks and sqeezed the shaft of the door knob to get in that way. Once you "break" the door knob using force your going to have to replace it right away though. So if it is your front or back door. I would try a diffenent door and worry about it in the day light

1. Channel your fear! It is in times of great human hardship that your creative side is forged!
2. Use this time to write a screenplay about being stuck behind an unyielding door.
3. Make it post-modern, self-referential and mildly funny.
4. ???
5. Profit.
