Do you have Ethernet on the laptop? Looks like a phone port but is wider with 8 contacts along the bottom rather than 2.

If so, get a router. Put the router between the modem and the computer, modem connected to the WAN port, computer to one of the LAN ports. Then get another Ethernet cable and connect the laptop to a second LAN port.

If you want to go mobile with the laptop, then get a wireless router and then get a PC card or USB wireless adapter for the laptop if it does not have wireless already.

sure, you're able to do what you describe. you will ought to purchase 2 ethernet cables long adequate to connect your computers to the on the spot router which you get carry of. the relationship is from an ethernet card on your computers (seek for the opening that sounds like a telephone jack, yet somewhat larger) to certainly one of those 4 jacks on the back of your new router. Your modem will connect (cable) to the router, no longer a working laptop or laptop. Your laptop will must be waiting to log onto the on the spot router--and additionally you ought to perform a little issues to guard it, pretty in case you're in a dorm, else all your friends will use it, too. Get some help placing it up--yet you ought to call the community some thing different than the default call service by the producer, turn off the printed of the community (or your equipment) call, use MAC filtering, and maximum mandatory--use WPA encryption, with a reliable key (password), some thing no longer certainly guessed or broken.
