We love the "smell" of coffee beans so we put some out in a glass bowl on our kitchen counter. Why are bugs, out in large force this time of year, not attracted to them?

I think the caffeine acts like a natural repellent. That also works for chilies.

Bugs are naturally threatened by superior predators. For example, the 'Grandus Lateus' or milk beetle which the coffee beans resemble. Try peanuts as an alternative source of beetle bait.

There's probably no insects in your region that would be naturally attracted to coffee beans (I imagine the growers have some type of pest in their regions). Plus, have you ever tried to bite into a coffee bean with no teeth? *vbg*
