Well it’s not the end of the Mayan calendar, as so many people have been told. In fact it continues on after 2012 unchanged. The Mayans were just really into cycles: the day, the phases of the moon, the seasons, ext... One really big cycle they found (that didn’t happen to make your traditional calendar) was that of the galactic year. That’s the amount of time it takes the sun to orbit once around the galaxy. Now keeping this in mind visualize the Milky Way from the side (like how an ant would see a fried egg from a few inches away). Now imagine a line running all the way around the outer rim exactly trough the center. This is the “galactic equator” and in 2012 the sun (and earth) will be passing trough it. There is nothing to worry about though, we do this every 26 thousand years or so.

I think a massive nuclear exchange will happen and billions of people world wide will die, however there will be places fairly untouched by fallout and radiation, places that are hundreds of miles away from major targets, these places will still see small amounts of fallout not as bad a the major cities and military bases but enough fallout to make the task of survival a challenge to say the least, small survivalist homesteads and wilderness folks will have a easier time of surviving, those survivalist homesteads will eventually become small towns or trading posts in a post apocalyptic world, ocean and sea going trade will virtually come to a halt because most ocean cargo ships are automated these days do if any coastal communities survive they will fail from lack of ocean trade and become simple fishing villages or towns, the level of technology will be vastly inferior because they will have been destroyed by electromagnetic blasts from the nuclear bombs, horse and buggy days will be common place after the bomb, millions more will die because they of the decline of medicine and the increase of thyroid cancer from the effects of radiation and fallout, but some where along the way mankind will rebuild itself again but this time a little wiser from having experienced near extinction.

I saw somewhere that there was some type of calander that they Mayan people made up a VEEERY long time ago will stop at 2012. People probley think that they can predict when the world will end because they was making up a calander for the Earth and stopped at 2012. For all we know they could have been making that calander for themselves and then there was probley something that killed them so the didn't have enought time to caculate a passed 2012. I don't think that means that they set that time for the world to end. Was they Jesus?? Did Jesus write it?? No. Then no one knows for sure. I also saw somewhere that it was the year of destiny, there was going to be a huge global change, and there was suppose to be exciting events. It also said something about they found out the people can live in the "end times" where ever that ment, probley just another false prediction of the end of the world, but not true. If it didn't say it in the Bible then no one know, but Heaven. It's Jesus's choice what will happen then and he can change his mind if he wanted to. Just wait and find out we still have another 5 years to prove that completly wronge and get other ideas. Don't worry.

The SUN is expected to reach peak activity in 2012. It's believed that the solar discharge may penetrate the Earths magnetic sphere at the equator. If it does it will totally disrupt the entire planets electrical systems worldwide! The largest transformers will all need to be replaced. We will not have power for years unless you have shielded power sources of your own! It's interesting that it will actually happen on 2012. The last time it peaked was in 1859 and all telegraph wires were useless and some sites actually caught fire.

I dont know about 2012 (i'm aware of the mayan thing) but a lot of awful things will happen in the years to come including:

-Peak oil and peak gas (almost there if not there alreay).

-Intensification of resource wars.

-Economic meltdown and stock market crash. It'll happen unless the global economy find a way to keep growing. Not gonna happen unless new abundant energy sources get developed and implemented.

-All the crazines that goes around with poverty and economic depression, including scapegoating, fascism and war.

How could we survive? By implementing radical economic, industrial and demographic changes. Not gonna happen, everyone is happy keeping the world the way it is. Maybe in 2015...

Nothing out of the ordinary will happen in 2012 and people will survive that year as well as any other year.

I heard that the Earth will experience an equal amount of gravitational pull from a black hole and from our sun. Also, that it's the end of an age, and the beginning of a new age. This was on a New Age discussion list, so I have no idea if it's accurate.

I would continue living in a way that would make the world a better place.

The question is: can we survive the incessant asking of this inane question?

Go read some real science, for everyone's sake.
