Like anything valueable, A-Rod is worth whatever a team is willing to pay. Team owners are trying to make money, and star players are a huge factor contributing to owner's goals. Owners want to sell tickets for the highest possible price that fans are willing to pay, sell merchandise, get sponsors, etc., Therefore they need to have players like A-Rod that draw fans, sell merchandise, attract sponsors, and oh yeah, give the team a better shot at winning a championship, which would only facilitate revenue from the examples above.
Personally I think it's too much for an athlete, and in the long run it hurts middle and lower class fans who can't keep up with raised ticket prices. Where else where owners find extra money needed to pay a human being $29,950,000 more than what the average American makes per year?

If you compare him to other players, then yeah he's worth it, as far as the Cardinals are concerned. They were the laughing stock of baseball in the 90's, then they get McGuire and find Pujols and are all of a sudden a juggernaut. When the owner purchased the team, he spent $150 million. The franchise is probably worth closer to $800 million by now and a huge part of that is due to Pujols. Pujols has also been under-paid the last decade and the team should show him the money out of respect. IF any other team goes over $24 million per season, then they are idiots. He is worth more to St. Louis than any other team and they should pay him for this. When you reach the level of Bonds, A-Rod, Jeter, Pujols and guys like this, it's more than just what the player does on the field. They are worth more to the team and city in terms of marketing. Side note... NONE of these players are worth what they are getting paid, and the owners keep jacking up the prices of tickets to be able to afford these guys. Hey, it's a capatalistic society... who are you to say these guys can't do this? Hmm? Who? A commie... that's who. Are you a Commie bastard? No? Then don't get pissed off because someone gets paid this much money. Are they crooks? yeah, they all are, but it has more to do with the owners who keep raising prices, and giving into the agents who demand more money for there players. What would you do if you were the best player in the game? Take a significant paycut because you're a nice guy, and let your owner rape you and have all the money? I mean, do you think if Pujols said that he would take $150 million instead of $300, that the owners will lower ticket prices? HA! I'm not even a Cardinals fan. The only nickname for Pujols is "The Best" in the game today.

Over the next ten years A-Rod alone will bring in more money for the team he is with than what they will pay him. Can you imagine the fans that will come to the park in New York, if he is with them, as he comes closer to set a new homerun record. Too many of us just look at the money some of these players are paid without considering what he gives in return to the team. Some movie stars make $20 million a movie and complete two in a year, I don't hear of too many people having a problem with that. It all comes down to market value and if someone is willing to give A-Rod that kind of money than that becomes his value in the market place.

I like A-Rod but I don't think any player is worth that much money. There aren't any supermans in baseball. There are a lot of other players who can do just as much if not more than what A-Rod does who doesn't currently make even close to his pay and probably wont ever get that much money.

With what contracts are going for these past few seasons he is actually a bargain. Afterall last season was his worst ever and he still batted at .300 120 RBI's and 35 homers...who else is doing this on a bad season? Oh and for comparison look at what Boston is getting for that much...a pitcher with a 10-7 record and ERA at about 5...not leading the league in anything. These payrolls are rediculous anymore.

Nobody is worth that much, but if MLB does not have a salary cap this will happen. Based on other players salaries he is worth $30million, he is the best there is and probably will wind up being the best ever. He puts people in the stands.

Remember when $30 million used to be an entire team's payroll? And that was only back in the early 90s, not _that_ long ago.
No one is worth that much money.

no single individual needs to make that much money for playing a sport. nobody is worth that much money. why do you think ticket prices are so high? it's because of these overpaid ballplayers.
if he plays 150 games in a year, he's making $200,000 per game!! that's astronomical!! most people don't make that in one year!! no athlete in all of sports is worth that much money.
some team out there will pay it. whether it be the angels or the yankees.
