When your commitment ends, you will continue to receive TiVo service as long as your TiVo account information is current. If your TiVo account information is current, you will continue to pay for your TiVo Package on a month-to-month basis. See full terms and conditions for TiVo Service Payment Plans for details. Keeping your account and credit card information will help you avoid any interruptions in service.

Of course you have to pay the subscription fee, and will have to keep doing so.

You have to pay the subscription fee for the rest of the life of the machine, which is where TiVo will make most of its profit from and why companies like Direct TV can offer them so cheaply.

My sister and her husband bought a TiVo when they first came out and paid for a lifetime subscription. They don't have to pay the normally monthly subscription fee like most people do. However, they are stuck with a TiVo that only has a 20 hour capacity. My brother-in-law is a computer engineer so he has upgraded the TiVo and is trying to get the maximum life out of it.

However, the most recent update to their TiVo caused some problems; they had to reprogram it. Some day that TiVo will no longer be usable not because it will fail, but because it won't be supported any more; the idea is called planed obsolesce.

I have been a loyal user of Microsoft Office 2000 since it came out and I use Windows XP. Recently I had to upgrade to newer version of Microsoft Office because Microsoft made sure that it would no longer work in Windows XP. To install the program two international fonts are needed. Microsoft published an automatic update for Windows XP that removed those two fonts. Once that happened it was impossible to reinstall the program and if you tried to use it then it would keep coming up with error messages. Even if you found the fonts and reinstalled them on your machine the automatic update for Windows XP would remove those fonts insuring that Microsoft Office 2000 will never be useable again.

In the 1950s we made goods that would last as long as possible. Car bodies were steel and a toaster from back then would still make toast today. The problem is that once you bought a toaster you wouldn’t have to buy another one for the rest of your life. The company makes more money when you have to replace the machine regularly. This business concept is called planed obsolesce and was created in the US. It is one of the costs of having up-to-date modern equipment. Every computer I had has a large watch battery on it, to keep time even when the machine is off. All mother boards are set up this way and I have never had to replace that battery. Long before that battery died the machine was obsolete. The companies that make those batteries will always have a demand for their batteries, because they know those mother boards are going to be replaced on a regular basis.
