i asked this question before but i didn't phrase it right...so here goes..i run a 23 hp mud buddy motor on my flat boat....there is no reverse on these motors and i'm thinking of putting on a trolling motor just for this purpose....it would only be used in tight situations, i.e. launching, marina, etc.....now, can i connect these wires directly to my battery without fear of running the battery down?? do i need to disconnect them right after i use them, or can they just stay connected....should i put alligator clamps on the connectors and only connect them when i use them, or should i just put in another battery?? i do have an extra...thanks

Normally a starting battery shouldn't be used as a trolling motor battery because it can't stand up to the repeated "deep cycling". It doesn't sound like you'll be using the trolling motor enough to deeply discharge the starting battery, so you might be okay. Your trolling motor shouldn't draw any power when it's off, unless there's a short somewhere, so it should also be okay to connect it to the battery posts with battery clamps instead of alligator clips. (BTW - I used to use a salvaged $10 battery from an auto wrecker with my trolling motor on my 12 ft boat. It would last for hours.)

Pop, as long as that trolling motor isn't turned on, it shouldn't draw down your battery. You could keep it tied in all of the time.

If you're really concerned about it, just put alligator clips on it. I'm assuming that you'd have the motor mounted to the transom, so you could trim off the excess wire to keep it tidy.

I wouldn't worry with an extra battery. No more than you're going to use the trolling motor, it's not worth the extra weight.

It's all in what you want Pop. Try it both ways to see which you prefer.

An extra battery and alligator clips is the best thing to do. It should not run your battery down, when it's not being used, but I sure wouldn't take the chance on my main (starting) battery.

If your permanently mounting the tro== motor than hard wire but if not then keep it simple. You have a charger on the mud so there not a problem with 1 bat. Have fun slinging & sliding.

from my experience it would be best to be able to disconnect after use, of course a deep cycle battery, i have wired them directly but had an on/off power switch disconnecting the positive terminal
