If a foreign power toppled our government, picked who would write our new constitution, got some of us to vote for their hand-picked candidates, and switched our Presidents whenever they felt like it...would you call that a legitimate government?

No, they voted for al-Jafari. He got kicked out by the US ambassador.

Sure, they voted for someone who would get US troops out of Iraq. Just like we did. Look what they got instead. Just like us.

Are you kidding.
They are dead in the water. They can't even get a quorum so they can even vote, and they are not a Democracy, and neither are we!

Obviously your question is rhetorical. It makes a good point, however. Unfortunately, Iraq seems to be under so much ethnic, religious, and political conflict that it would be hard to create any government that is legitimate. It's similar to the situation of the former Yugoslavia; once Tito was gone and the Iron Curtain fell, a country that was made up of differing ethnic and national groups fell apart because there was no strong force to keep it togethr. As horrible as things may have been under Saddam Hussein, you can make a good case that the present situation is worse.
Unfortunately, America has never really figured out that not all of the world wants or is ready for democracy and the freedom to buy Coca Cola. No Arab country has any tradition of democracy; trying to impose it is a huge exercise in futility.

"Got some of us to vote for their hand picked candidates"
Buddy, not sure where you've been, but 70% (on average) of their population voted in their last election. AND they were facing car bombs, suicide bombs, death squads..... That truly is impressive.
Most Westernized countries would DIE for that kind of turnout. Puts us to shame really.
Of course, 40 or so years of rape, abductions, mass murder, WMD attacks and crimes against humanity will generally make people care about who is running their country.
On top of that, their current PM is backed by Al Sadr, you know, the guy at the top of the United States Hit List. Why would we put him there?
