The magic in Eragon is far better explained and meaningful than the haphazard magic in Harry Potter.
Eragon is too archetypal. While both stories incorporate the age-old "hero's journey", Eragon's journey is extremely typical, while Harry's is more unique.
The culture of Eragon is much better defined than the culture in Harry Potter. Eragon has a believable history, while the history of Harry Potter is amusing but also confusing.

I prefer Harry Potter to Eragon, because, as serveral other previous answers have pointed out, Eragon is not really that original, and while I still immensely enjoyed both Eragon and Eldest, I couldn't help but notice that if you took the Star Wars original trilogy storyline and put it into a Lord of the Rings setting, you would end up with Eragon. I think this is especially apparent in Eragon.
And although you could argue that Harry Potter is not that original either, as the idea of witches and wizards and magical creatures have been around forever, I still think that those have only influenced the Harry Potter series, not dictated it.

I think that Harry Potter is better because it has more imagination in the books than in Eragon. The series is still good I mean I'm still wondering when the third is coming out,but in the books of Eragon some of the creatures and ideas are similar to the Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter is original because there in no other book that has even a few similarities with the book.

Similarties a million. the two are boys who ought to defeat an evil 2. the two are orphans (or properly Eragons 0.5 an orphan...i assume) 3. the two have been reported with the aid of their aunt/uncle from their mothers area of the relatives 4. the two can do magic (additionally a difference) 5. the two have a secret society assisting them out (order of the phoenix and that i think of this is the leading edge in Eragon) 6. the two have previous mentors (Brom and Dumbledore) adjustments a million. Eragon can do magic yet isn't a 'wizard' 2. Eragon's Father became into evil, whilst Harry's dad became into no longer 3. Harry attends a school, Eragon travels via his 'united states of america' 4. Eragon fights with swords and Harry does not... ok yea, the adjustments suck, yet i'm hoping the similarities help you out!

Eragon left out to much detail from the book. If you watched the movie before reading the book you would be overwhelmed by the book. Harry Potter follows the book more. It includes more detail from the book.

Eragon is truly great and masterful, but Harry Potter beats it by at least a mile.

I would totally choose Eragon over Harry Potter. It seems a bit more realistic to me. Besides, in my opinion, Harry Potter is lame.
