I'd like someone to talk to about your experiences as a student. I'm a journalism major. I'm pretty sure this is the major for me, but journalists don't make a lot of money and it kind of worries me. Also, I'm sometimes bothered how journalists are labeled as nosey and rude. How does this make you feel?

Thirty years after college graduation, I'd say I've discovered that few journalists are in it for the money. Oh, they complain about it a bit, and do outside jobs to earn more, but the reporting and writing are the main attractions. It takes a different sort of personality to do the job. The owners of the printing press are the ones who get rich.

As far as the rude issue is concerned, I try to remember that I am invading people's lives at times, particularly if they are not public figures. Therefore, I try to be polite in all conversations, tell them what to expect, and thank them a lot. You don't have to be a jerk to get into this business and do it well, and you'll probably benefit in the long run.

I graduated with a journalism degree. I never regretted my decision to take this course. I've always loved writing and this is the perfect course for me.

On the contrary, journalists can make a decent amount of money. Let's say you work as a reporter in a newspaper, you can also do some freelance work like teaching, editing, or writing for other publications (that don't compete with your newspaper). Rates vary depending on what you do.

Well, nosey is part of the job. If you're not nosey, you can't find good news. Rude is something else because not all journalists are rude. If you're a papparazzi, then that's rude. But papparazzis are not considered journalists.
