The black culture in todays society is not at a disadvantage. The problem is that they are currently in self destruct mode. The majority live in inner city type situations where the status quo is barbarack and partially lawless. The family unit has been destroyed by men impregnating countless women and never actaully fullfilling a father role. Those that persever and make something of their lives are chastized and cut out from the rest of the black community. The leaders are bigots and currupt; yet the black people defend them because their leaders cry racism, therefore absolving the people from responsibility.

It is up to Black people to clean up their our society and join the rest of America. When this happens, they will become equal with whites. As they should be.

(slavery as an excuse is dead)

You would have to be blind to not see that blacks have more disadvantages than whites do in America. I am a 47 year old white male and I see it.

The thing is that we are all given advantages and disadvantages in our life and it is up to us to overcome them as best we can.

Slavery; was a cruel and horrible act and nothing can justify the treating of one person as property by another person. But, it happened and that cannot be changed. It does leave black people with an advantage though, they live here in America. An advantage that was paid for with blood and more pain than I care to imagine, but look at the pain Africa is going thorough today and look at the blood that has been spilt there. In both cases black people are suffering and the average black person has it worse than the average white person.

However, blacks in America are at least American citizens. They have a huge advantage over those in places like Rwanda, the refuges of Darfur or those starving in Ethiopia. Nothing in life if free; when the Aryans immigrated to Europe life was hard for them and they paid the price and finally became successful. Life wasn't easy in early America either.

So who has it worse; blacks of course. I am not going to claim that in all their history whites paid as much in blood and pain as the black people did, I am not so short sighted. But, that price has been paid; life is unfair. It is up to what each of us does to use the advantages that we have and to overcome the disadvantages put in front of us.

For a long time the Jewish people were a people without a homeland. They too paid in blood and unimaginable pain, especially during the Concentration Camps of WW2. They still are paying for being Jewish with hatred and disadvantages. They have to take the advantages and disadvantages that life has given them and do what they can with them.

I dont think African Americans are at any disadvantage at all. Anyone in America can be what they make of themselves. As long as you have the drive and passion for what you want to achieve then the sky is the limit reguardless of race.

Corporations are actively looking for qualified and talented minorities of all countries. languages, and races. In a global economy a company wants to sell products and services to everyone, globally. To exclude any group is to cut sales, lose profitability, and limit markets.

As long as you have old money in America blacks will always be at a disadvantage. The oldest names in American riches such as the Rockefellers etc. got a head start from slavery. They got rich off the land blacks worked for free and when slavery was over got to keep their money. Blacks started out in America struggling against an opponent with a 400 year head start. Whites started out with control of the economy and the government and for years the black community has been trying to win a space in it.

As opposed to other races such as Jews, Irish, Italian, or even Mexican immigrants that chose to come over to America blacks were ripped from their homeland and stripped of their history. We are not as connected of a community as any of the aforementioned groups, we don’t have our own language, and barely our own culture.

When black Africans were brought over to American as slaves they were figuratively castrated. They were stripped of their role as head of household and replaced by a slave master who would often rape and abuse their wives right in front of them and their was nothing they could do about it.

After years of this treatment how could anyone be expected to be a father, the black man was made to feel so helpless he has been left with generations worth of psychological damage. Slavery instilled in the black community a sense of division, if it didn't the slaves who outnumbered the Southern white population could have overturned the whole institution of slavery, but they did not, for a house divided cannot stand.

Racism still exists in our schools, in the work place, and in the minds of bigots everywhere. Blacks are still at a disadvantage more so than any other race can ever claim. Affirmative Action is no longer based on race alone but on five other factors that can be found on government websites (e.g. rural background, low high school matriculation percentages, etc.) and is now being overturned overall. The decision made in Brown v. Education is being overturned also. Everything blacks have worked for is falling apart.

White people don’t notice white privilege because they live with it their whole lives. What color are band - aids, "flesh toned" clothes, etc. Blacks even have to get special order prosthetics because they only make the stock ones in the color of caucasian skin.

Can a black succeed in today's world? by all means yes, but not without twice the work any white person puts in to get there. The whites had a head start, and because of the psychological damage that slavery, Jim Crowe, and segregation caused blacks will always be at a disadvantage.

No I am not making excuses for the lazy black people that are out there, but I am explaining how difficult it is for those blacks who are out there trying to make something for themselves. The majority of them are one or two generations out of poverty, and the only person they can fall back on is themselves.

As a response to the answer above mine, why are the blacks in Africa suffering, they are the richest nation in the world when it comes to natural resources. They are suffering because of white colonialism. What right does any white man have to "own" a diamond mine, was no one there when you found it? I guess since no one white was there thats all that matters. The white people stripped Africa of its natural resources and sold them to make themselves rich while leaving behind poor Africans and inciting civil wars between the native people.

I think we may be at a bit of a disadvantage at times but that is no excuse. If we try harder and have our mind in the right place we will be better off
