Click on the Start button and select Control Panel. In the Control Panel window there is an icon called Network Connections. Click on it. All your active connections will be in the window. Right click on the connection you wish to modify. Click on properties. Scroll the window down until you see TCP/IP. Select it and click on properties. Select use the following IP Address. Now the format for a standard IP address such as used at home or at work would be 192.168.1.XXX (XXX usually in the range of 101 and higher). Your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. Don't vary from that. Before you make any manual changes to your IP address click on start. Clock on run, type cmd and press enter. That brings up a command window. Type ipconfig /all. That will display all the network connections associated with that computer. You need to run ipconfig /all on all the computers on your network and jot down their IP addresses otherwise when you change your IP you may run into a conflict with another machine. Incidentally, this may be a good exercise in learning networking techniques; however, it won't affect how your computer is shown on the web since that is determined by your host provider. If you are trying to become anonymous, you'll have to download or buy a program such as Anonymizer or subscribe to an anonymous web service.

Short answer: It depends. Your Internet Service Provider either has you on DHCP--Dynamic Host Control Protocol, not guaranteeing you a static address each session--or a Static IP address.

In Windows XP:

Click the Start menu in the lower left hand part of the screen.
Click Run.
In the space provided type "ipconfig /release" and click OK. Note that there is a space between ipconfig and the /release.
To renew the IP address from the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig /renew". Note that there is a space between ipconfig and the /renew.

Releasing and Renewing an IP address on Windows XP
Click the Start menu in the lower left hand part of the screen.
Click Run.
In the space provided type "ipconfig /release" and click OK. Note that there is a space between ipconfig and the /release.
Type "ipconfig /renew". Note that there is a space between ipconfig and the /renew.

In Vista, you can type the same into the command prompt: Type "cmd" into the Start Search location and click on the resulting "Command Prompt" that comes back in the results.

If you are on Dial up - Your ISP assigns the IP address each time you connect.

If you are on DSL/ADSL and use a router, The router assigns an IP address to your PC. Click Start - Run - type "CMD" . IN the DOS window type IPCONFIG ALL. This will show the ip address assigned to your network card.

This IP address is only used between your PC and the Router and is NOT USED on the net. The router uses a different IP on the NET and it is assigned by your ISP. You don't have any control over it. This is how the hard ware fire wall in the router works.

Release and renew your IP address through the command prompt or make a batch file.

@ECHO OFF
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Type the above into notepad and save it as a .bat file.

Click on it to renew your IP addresses.

Your ip address can't change constantly the way you think. It's assigned to each pc so that law enforcent can track down people who violate the law online.
