I would like to learn a little about astronomy and I am totally clueless about how to use a compass!

try searching for parks that have navigation trails. they have coordinates on posts to the next one. this will teach you how to use a compass. also the red needle always points north. which means if you facing in the direction the red needle is facing then east is to your left and west is to your right, south being behind you.

I learned how to use one in a field biology class. I think the best way would be to read about it though. A good compass for navigation can be rather expensive, but it's worth it because you can find precise bearings to determine your location or to find out how to get back to the same spot. Contrary to popular belief, a compass is not a magical device and it must be observed constantly to keep you from getting lost. Good night!

ok its simple so i will tell you. it alighns the north magnetic fields wich will obviously point to north. and there is the other ways. watch man vs wild and he has funny ways of using a compass. he once use a think wire and a tree leave it actually worked

just set it down on a level surface, it will point north...approximately...on its own, if functioning correctly. either that or hold it level in your hands. as with most learning, experience is best, so practice.
