Also when should I look to replace the alternator, should it have been done at a certain mileage, or what?

please let a pro do it!!!!!!!! if it is done wrong it can cost you a great deal more when you have to replace the cyl.head.if its time for a timing belt spend just a little more and put on a water pump,and cam and crank seals,the mech. is already in there for the most part and the charge should be for parts and a minor bump in labor to replace the other parts.if it is well over 100000 miles you might consider replacing the timing belt tensioner and idler pully also.very cheap insurance. average cost between 700-1000 depends on how much you do and how much labor rate is
