Artistically Roman cultures influenced the ideals of grandeur in architecture and the beautification of public places and perfected Egyptian technique of egg tempera (paint mixed with egg white and painted on wood), gave us the tomb stone (from Roman steely, or memorial structure), gave us fresco's, they taught us how to make realistic sculptures. They also gave us mosaics. And politically they refined Greek ideas of democracy, and gave us the language Latin, in which laws are still written. They also gave us the senate, and taxation for representation. They gave us the notion that all men are born equal (which ironically applied to white roman born males and not to women or slaves). the ideals of a senate and representatives meeting to discuss and debate political issues as well as military organization Rome reigned as a supreme military force for very long time. Technologically, Roman cultures gave us the aqueduct, true arch (which allowed the construction of aqueduct), gave us concrete. They used Phi, or the golden ratio, to perfect and beautify buildings (although it was discovered by Greeks, the Romans used it in building). And even the advancements of weaponry, and again in architecture, they used coleus in their building, and gave us a blue print for all major cities today: zero lot line housing. They also perfected sewerage and drains, running water, and even the tap and gave us baths.

Roman culture (as compared with Roman politics) was almost entirely a transmission of the earlier Greek culture. So how they influenced later societies was by preserving the Greek culture they so admired. Of course, in doing so, they were effectively pointing up the value of the Greek culture for future generations.
Politically, the big thing was the Empire, and the little, hardly noticed thing was the Republic. There really was a Roman Republic for awhile, and although it failed, it provided something of a model for later societies, right down to the formulation of the American Constitution. That's why we call one of our congressional bodies the Senate: the word comes from the primary political body of the Roman Republic.
