My favorite teacher was still new to teaching and enthusiastic. He was kind of geeky, with bad skin and bad clothes. Lots of kids made fun of him, but he'd get so excited about his subject (history) that it was absolutely clear that he enjoyed what he was doing. He gave us lots of opportunities to do research and answer questions for ourselves, getting extra credit as a reward. He tried to spend a little time with each student, getting to know us. You knew that he was just trying to get to know you as some kind of teaching exercise, but it felt really good anyway to get special attention. I still remember things from his class, and it was a long, long time ago. I hope he stayed as enthusiastic about teaching as he was when I had him as a history teacher. Thanks, Mr. Williams!

My favorite teacher was my music teacher senior year. Unfortunately, he only came to our school that year so I only had him then. He's still there, changing up the music program and stuff. He's a little Italian guy, he plays guitar and piano really well (especially piano), he's an incredible singer. He's very interested in musical theater (it's his specialty) much like the stereotypical gay music teacher. He's a sweetheart and he really cares about his students. He took it hard when people didn't like him during his first year, but he's in much more control now over the chorus than he was then. He was there for me the whole year and I was able to help him deal with the chorus.

My favorite teacher was my band director in high school. He taught & influenced his students as a friend. This isn't to say he wasn't clearly in charge and in control, he was - but more because he was respected and liked by his students than because he'd send them to the office or hand out detentions. A plaque he had in his office stuck with me, it said: Do not follow me, I may not lead; do not go ahead of me, I may not follow; just walk beside me, and be my friend.
He provided valuable guidance and influenced me far beyond my career in music (no slouch there either - competition results rivaling any music program in the state while he was there). He's since moved on to a University position, which is sad for the students in my hometown, but I still consider him a friend and talk with him several times a year though it's been 10 years since I graduated and I now live 300 miles away.

The worst was definitely a substitute teacher that worked at my elementary school. She was insane, and now when I look back on it, I think she must have been severely bipolar. Because at times, she would have a sense of humor and make jokes and would tell stories to kids. But then any little thing could set her off and she would just go on a tirade and SCREAM at the top of her lungs. Kids were so scared of her. Any time my regular teacher would tell us that she was going to be absent and that this lady was going to be our sub, the whole class went "Noooooo!" Anyway, she substituted for my class a few times when I was in 1st grade. I remember she happened to be subbing for us when we had field day. We were just playing some racing game and the teacher running it told us to high five the next student in line before they started running. And the substitute teacher got mad all because I finished and forgot to tag the next kid, even though the kid still knew it was his turn and went. Luckily she didn't actually do one of her full-out screaming tirades, but she still was just all like, "You were supposed to touch his hand! You don't listen! Blah blah blah". She made such a huge deal out of that! But again, she yelled at other kids ten times worse than that, so I guess I was somewhat lucky. I also remember having her a couple times in 3rd grade. But finally, she got fired because she apparently cussed out a kid. And I'm pretty sure it was a younger kid, like 2nd grade. So needless to say we never saw her again after that!

I'd have to agree. My favorites were, well, my favorite because of how they taught the material, how they spoke/approached the students, and I DID appreciate a teacher that knew (for the most part) what they were talking about.
An approachable authority that shares their knowledge was (and probably still is) always the best. :-)

My favorite teacher was a man who convinced me I could actually give a speech. I was so dumb that I thought that speech class in college would be about how we might might talk to other people and pronounciate words. I was absolutely terrified about talking about any topic in front of 30 strangers. I wound up talking about the thing I cared most about at the time, my cat "Abigail." I actually got a 92, meaning an A. I brought pictures of her, and her favorite toys, and showed everyone how we played together, and I couldn't help but being emotional when it came to talking about her and how much she meant to me. He told me I charmed everyone, and that meant a lot to me. I am guessing it was because it came from my heart.

I think my favoirte was my eighth grade teacher. She was always understanding and fair. She even sent me a gift on the day I graduated from a Different HIgh School. Her school only went to the eight grade. She was also the principal and I don't remember anyone ever complaining when they got caught at any thing, that she wasn't fair to them...Good woman...

My favorite instructor was way back in high school, Coach Baer. He also taught dum dum Math and I was his teacher's aide. He taught with so much compassion and he really cared for his students. But at the track, he was the field events coach. He would scream and yell at you and call you twenty different dirty names!!!! He was the teacher who made me decide to be a teacher, I tried to teach like Coach Baer!!!

My favorite teacher was my 8th grade us history teacher, Mrs. Castaneda. She taught with such enthusiasm and energy. She made everything into a story using modern day examples to explain something. She was very creative and intelligent.
