If you're looking for a fantasy novel besides LOTR, try The Belgariad by David Eddings, or something like the Shannara books by Terry Brooks.

On the other hand, definitely read The Foundation novels... they are epic in scale... and really really good, (but it isn't fantasy, it's sf)

I definitely have to go with Lord of the Rings. It's the best fantasy quest epic I know of.

Most have been mentioned, also The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan was looking good until the 5th book, then it became a soap opera, it never ends and just plots plots plots.....

Eragon and Eldest are awesome books. They have a lot of fantasy and swordf ights.
