These foamy bubbles are at the top of his water and make a messy ring around his bowl. I don't want to use a filter because I've seen betas get caught in them.

That a bubble nest and it's normal for a healthy betta to blow a bubble nest. He is attempting to attract a mate. You can remove it, but he will just build it back again and again.

A betta does best in a filtered aquarium and if proper care is used in selecting a filter that's not too strong the betta will have no problem with it.

Bubble Nest Betta

Your male betta is getting ready for a female. He makes a bubble nest then courts the female. Wraps himself around her, she goes limps and her eggs fall out, while she recovers, the male gathers up the eggs and puts them in his bubble nest. There is not really anything you can do you keep him from making one. If you put the bottom of a styrafoam cup in floating in the tank, he will make his nest in their and it won't touch the glass.

MM is 100% ccorrect, it is a bubble nest and it is a good thing, it means you are doing every thing right ^_^

Good for you.

I don't know how large your "bowl" is but they make filters they you use an air pump. there not power-full enough to get the fish stuck, but good enough to clean the tank a bit...

Best of luck,

He is building a bubble nest. This means that he is ready for a female.

Your betta will live much longer if you add a filter. An internal sponge filter won't trap your betta and it will clean up his messes.
