Our system now is almost barbaric and resembles torture. In many cases people are forced to starve to death or slowly wither away taking weeks. This is simply not right.
First, each person needs a living will. The will should have clear directions such as a no resuscitation order. The will should be immune from attack from family members regardless of religion or personal beliefs. An attack on the will should be considered a personal act of treason. Without the will the next of kin is responsible for carrying out the wishes of the terminally ill.
For me, the answer is basic empathy. If we don’t want to live in a certain condition, then why are we forcing this condition on others.
I do not wish to live a terminal condition when my mind is no longer functioning. I am no longer present…let me go.

My father has struggled with a debilitating disease for the past 15 years. He has now opted for no more treatment. We did not try to disuade him. We just want him to be as comfortable as possible. I don't think that if you truely love someone you can help them die. I don't think that anyone who truely loved you would even ask. It would be purely selfish to put the burden of your own death on someone else's conscience. it isn't fair. I know there are people out there in so much pain that they feel they can't endure anymore. But their life will come to an end when it's time, and not a moment sooner.

Euthanasia or mercy killing takes away the pride of a dying person. The pain and suffering of a dying person is his last stand - I won't tip it over.
I don't believe there is really mercy involved in killing a suffering person - it is genuine love for him and a genuine courage in your part to let him suffer (if there's really nothing you can do anymore) until his last breath!!

Yes, by being with them, showing them love, telling them it is ok to move on.
If you mean assisting them to kill themselves - that's a whole other issue and I couldn't do it. Some doctors will be compassionate and I think they are the only ones that know what to do and when to do it.
Been there done that - twice.

If I would not be charged and sent to jail I sure would, It amazes me we can put our beloved animals to sleep when the quality of life just isn't there anymore, why is it we cannot bestow the same kindness on our human loved ones?
