Maybe your shadow is just a symbol of everyone's alter ego. sometimes it leads, sometime it follows, sometimes it is right at your side, as in hand to hand. Maybe it is the dark side of you. or in an inverse world, you are the dark side of it. Its all in perspective, and how you perceive it. I hope this gives you some food for thought, as it did for I.

It really depends on your direction and where you are going.. Sometimes your shadow is behind you, other times it is sort of under you, then it could also be in front of you, and don't forget when it is on the side of a wall. Oh yeah this is metaphorically speaking.

I want to believe that my Shadow is following me haha sometimes we are on equal terms when I can reflect whats realistic and fantasy and then from there move on accordingly :))) In the end my shadow will always follow me and never the other way around :))

Since you asked for the question to not include literal interpretations of direction and light sources, I will address possible metaphors.

Metaphorically speaking you might be alluding to whether or not we are followers or leaders, and whether or not we have free will? Religious believers explain away God allowing evil in the world by believing man was given free will to choose good vs. evil. In this sense, a believer might answer that their shadow follows them. That they are in charge of their decisions and actions. Or, being religious, they might assume the shadow is God's will, or the Holy Spirits and if they want to live their life like Jesus, they should follow their "shadow". Either interpretation could be valid.

You might be asking are we really in charge of our lives, our fate, our destiny, or could our lives be predestined? In this sense even though we might think we have free will and choice, we might inadvertently be following our shadow. We are all in a sense servants to our genetics and our environment. Nature vs. Nurture. All of which reduces somewhat the concept of free will, or having our shadow follow us.

Some interesting thoughts to ponder...

My shadow is the my sounding board when there is no one I can talk to, its my confirmation of my existence in THIS world. Sometimes I can be lead around like a curious puppy by my shadow and other days it just hangs around waiting for what ever may happen next. Its kind of like the physical representation for may conscious being. Its a good friend.

I just ignore my shadow and my shadow ignores me. Metaphorically speaking, that is.
