pitchers mound to homeplate and to bases, bowling alley, football fields, basketball rim 10 ft?---how did they determine the perfect length considering each sports?

Trial and error, in many cases. The distances have shifted around in many cases, particularly in the early years of the sport. Baseball moved the mound back when overhand pitching became popular. Sixty feet, six inches is a little odd, but someone probably wanted the pitchers to be out of the way of all infield throws, and that was a way to do it.

And sometimes coincidence helps. In basketball, James Naismith hung peach baskets off the balcony of the gym in the Springfield YMCA. They were 10 feet off the ground. Presto.
