If you want a piano that doesn't take up much space, you can go for an upright piano. Also, if you like the look of the grands, you can go for a baby grand which are usually 4 ft- 6 ft. in length. All pianos sound different and depend a lot on the brand. Baby grands and grands sound more similar, because they have the same exact structure but the baby is, obviously, smaller. Uprights will sound quite different from the big ones. Also, if the person playing gets advanced, the upright might not suit all their needs. A lot of uprights have only 2 or even 1 pedal instead of the usual 3 you find on babies and grands.
Steinway, is the top brand in the piano making industry, but, those prices are VERY HIGH!!! Boston and Yamaha are s pretty good ( but still expensive). A good piano with a decent price is a Kawai. (Note the strange spelling. It is spelled this way.) I own a Henry F. Miller, which is a Chinese made brand. Don't be descouraged. They have a deep, resonant, sound. I really like it.
Glossy finish can get too troublesome with all the fingerprints and dust. The non-glossy (sanded) finish hides the finger-prints and dust a lot better.
And remember, be sure to tune the piano at least once a year.
Beware: during temperature changes, the sound will change as well. During the summer, keys will start to buzz and go out of tune. (That is if you live in an area with hot summers.)
P.S. Digital pianos may work for you as well. They're expensive, but have cool sounds and some can compose for you as well.

A lot depends on how much you want to spend.

I take it from your question that you want an upright piano rather than a grand (the big ones). You can purchase a pretty good quality upright piano in the price range US $5000 to $12000 depending on size and brand.

I recommend Boston, Essex (both designed by Steinway), Yamaha and Young Chang. If you can afford it, get a Steinway, which start at about $25,000. There simply is not a better piano than Steinway.

But you used the word portable, so maybe you want an electronic (or digital ) instrument. There are really only two good ones, Roland and Yamaha both start at under $2000.
I think digital is okay, but I'd rather have the real thing -- it will last longer and hold its value better.

I don't know where you live so I cannot recommend a store.

Visit www.rolandus.com, www.steinway.com, and www.youngchang.com.

Good Luck!!

We own a Steinway - which is NOT what you are looking for! You seek a good digital piano. www.musiciansfriend.com is a good place to start looking. Get 88 notes, and then decide about *weighted* keys or not. This will give you the most realistic action- but the instrument will be about 50 pounds - not exactly portable. It *used* to be that, or synth ( spring ) action - but there are now good compromises. You can get an 88 note M0Audio with 5 good piano sound that has simulated weighted action - and weighs 17 pounds. You can get instruments with MANY different sounds - hundred and hundreds - but make sure that the genuine piano sounds are accpetable to you. You can play any of these either with headphones, or an amp.

Do some research - stick with good brands, like Roland, Korg, M-Audio, Yamaha - you might find something in Casio, even.
