It has been working fine for the past 10 months. Now, all of a sudden- it's dead. The gears don't even attempt to start up. It's as if it's been disconnected. I checked the plug and the fuse- both on and ok. Could the motor be fried or is it possible that there is another cause for its malfunction?

If it jammed it might have tripped the overload protector on the motor (usually a little red button that has popped out). Press it in until it clicks and resets. use the wrench that came with the disposer to try to turn it and make sure it is not jammed. Shut off the power when you do that. If you can't find the little wrench use the end of a broomstick to make sure it turns OK.

Motor fried is unlikely (unless it had an internal leak that ruined it.) If yours really did die, most of them unplug and can be removed with a quarter turn from underneath. So replacing it is not a big deal to do.

I bet you 10 to 1 it's the reset button. Open the door and look close to the top of the machine, most of the buttons are red. Push it and see if it comes back on. Mine did that and was out for several months till someone told me about it.

If that still doesn't work then it could be clogged. So it doesn't burn the motor or catch on fire it may have a safety off switch if food gets stuck.

But try the reset button first.

if i let mine run too long, it will shut off. So far it has been the reset button. Its the red button located on the bottom of the disposal. But if that isnt the problem a new disposal is in order. They are relatively inexpensive. One other thing, dont use it for putting everything down the disposal. You know like potato peelings, egg shells, etc. Just use it for general clean up. They have their purpose but they arent the dump.
