We must rely on public transportation. We are 3 women over 30. No sports events. We'd like historical sites, art, parks, unique/unusual sites. Good food! Thanks for the help.

Do the freedom trail, it goes all around the downtown area and hit ALL the major historical sites.

It officially starts at the boston commons and wraps it's way around the city, but you can "hop on" anywhere you see the red bricks in the sidewalk. Most of the hotels will have a map that will show you the route, but we did the whole thing with no map and just walked all day long and found all the major sites- Paul reevere's houes, the old north church, red dragon pub, old state house, the new capital building... everything.

The city looks big on the map, but it really is a walking city, everything is very close and it's only a few steps between each major stop on the map

Public transportation in Boston is great, you can see almost everything you want by taking the "T". try the T's website (http://www.mbta.com/) to find out about 1 day passes that will let you on and off the trains for one price ($9.00) and can be ordered ahead of time.

Histoical sites are EVERYWHERE in boston as a matter of Fact The Pubic transit system is the oldest in the country ( 4th largest too) If you want History and good food try the north end. (our Lil' Italy) or Chinatown.
Good Food is everywhere in boston.
Boston also has some great parks, The Boston common is one of the oldest public parks in the country, The Boston Public Garden is beautiful. take a look at http://www.cityofboston.gov/parks/ for more info.
Have fun and enjoy our city!

It all depends on how you want to theme your day.

On my daytrips to Boston, here's what I like to do. Start w/ brunch in chinatown, then head over to Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), then I head to Newbury street and wander the shops. After that, it's off to Fanueil Hall to shop and gorge. After that, if I have time (and am not flying out yet), I usually eat at Durgin Park, No names, or somewhere in the north end. But that's just me. :-)

For you, it'll depend on what you want to do.

For a shopping trip, I'd hit Copley Square/Prudential Center area, then over to Newbury street, then to shopping district on the way to Filene's Basement, then Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market for some additional fun shopping/eating.

For a museum tour, I'd head to Museum of Science first to be sure you get tickets to the planetarium, then over to Museum of Fine Arts.

For a historical tour, I'd hit the Old South meeting house, the Boston Common/swanboats, the Old north church, the cemetary/graveyard around the corner where famous folks like John Hancock are buried. Then over to Paul Revere's house and the North end for lunch. Followed by an afternoon in Charlestown visiting old ironsides and visiting Bunker hill.

Those are my must sees for a day! Pick what you like and have a wonderful time!!!

I did the duck tour, it's okay
Red trolley (I think is the name) I think is the best to get around the city. It let you on and off different spots. You can see the whole city, and get off the bus when you want
If you early, take the whole tour, then get off the bus
Good luck, have fun

Take the Duck Tour as early as possible - make reservations well in advance. Lots of choices afterwards.
