why are you competing with everyone, and in the process..generating a dog eat dog world?
youre so serious, you want to compete with your friends on who can have the more exotic holiday destination..or who can own the more prestigious car..or who can be more knowledgeable about art!

the americans among you seem to have been brainwashed with the philosophy that "he who dies with the most possessions wins"!

haven't you watched citizen kane?...!!

People look for the approval of others more than they realize I think. If people perceive that being rich, climbing the corporate ladder, and knowing about art is going to make people impressed with them, that's a powerful motivator to try those things, even if they don't admit that's why they do them.

Having a big house and big salary allows you to not take life too seriously.

I don't want those things to compete with anyone else. I want them because they enhance my enjoyment of life. Having these things allow me to go to the college that makes me happiest (as an adult!), pursue the hobbies I most enjoy, and obtain the experiences in life that are hard to get without money. But I couldn't give a @#!% what others have, or why they have it.

And believe me, no-one who takes life seriously drives their porsche down a highway in Montana at 150 MPH. And few without money will experience that.

I'm not citizen Kane. I don't pursue wealth for it's own sake. I pursue it for what it can provide. You'll have to admit, someone had to BUY rosebud. Mine's a candy red 911.

no i havent watched that.
i see what your saying...
now i'm still 16, so i'm not completely brainwashed [[ yet ]].
but i'd just like to say that... it's kind of nice to compete... i mean it's not that i want the most possessions when i die... i just want to be super comfortable... society is formed so that we either:

work our a**es off and miss seeing our own children grow up.
or
get rich through something that doesnt require real talent.

i feel as if i'm left with no choice but to compete. even though i feel i might not do well. competing is still a motivation to get to that super comfortable life style i dream about.
i want the big house and big salary because maybe i can be one of those people that gets to see the kids grow up... and as for the big status... i'd rather keep it on the down low.

Why are you gereralising about what people want. I am a nurse and didn't go into that profession for the money, prestiege or status. Alot of people are materialistic, but alot also have different perspective on life. I don't want a big house, 5star holidays, and a fleet of rolls royces. On the other hand I don't want to live in the gutter either.

Are you saying that whoever chases those things are taking life serious? I have to disagree. If a person is worried about a big house or fast cars it shows you how nieve they are. People that do that are living a dream in which they got lucky and it came true. If someone is taking life serious they would be working towards happiness and peace in the world not towards conquering.

im sorry but apperently not everyone is the same huh?
i don't look for large houses (unless filled to the brim with my family) because a big empty house is frightening!
Money? who cares that much about money? i need it up to a point there are bills that need to be paid and i don't wish to be in debt over my head forever but i dont care about having a million dollars in the bank and i couldn't care less if i married a man who has a crappy job and can't afford squat!

when i die everything i have will not go with me no matter where i go so whats it matter to me if my house is filled with possessions or just an empty bookcase....
get a life man! i don't like bein' spoken to in that manner
*muah!

was i? am i? I've watched citizen Kane, rosebud and all that but I'd still rather drive an Aston martin than my Mitsubishi. a big house rather than my two bed roomed flat? a holiday in the Bahamas rather than south end on sea? knowing about art rather than not? what have you got against Americans? sitting at your American computer? go live in a monastery.

I don't take life seriously, I would enjoy a small to medium size house, am happy with my 05 Chevy Cav and have an ok Salary and no status.

Who exactly is this directed towards?

each and all the earthly possessions belonged to someone could be considered as a results of fact the emblem of his or her status. in spite of the undeniable fact that, what we see outwardly, won't continually be the actual photograph of the status of somebody as a results of fact the gold of certainty is often discovered after digging out the soil. As such, underground certainty related to the status of someone is often pondered externally from character. So the final image of status isn't purely the actual visual appeal of a guy alongside with all his extreme priced possessions in spite of the undeniable fact that it is extensive-unfold from character and habit too.

Maybe we do take life too seriously and chase the big toys, like to and want too. The question is what makes you think you know that everyone else is blindfolded and you see the truth?
