Upright vac's. aren't really meant to be used on hardwood, or vinyl for that matter. Some of them will have a setting where the revolving brush roll doesn't revolve and they will claim that at that setting use of the machine on hardwood or vinyl is not only safe, but preferred. That's mostly crap. The best scenario for hardwood and vinyl if you need to vacuum, is a cannister with a hose and bare floor attachment, with soft natural fiber bristles, (not plastic). Several of the better vac. manufacturers use horse mane or tail hair as the bristles on their upholstery dusting tools and on their bare floor tools, these are the best.

There are vacuums that are made specifically for multi-surface cleaning. Such as the Dyson Animal. This vac features a brush roll disengage button, preventing the hard floor from being scratched while leaving suction. Also it has a self adjusting base plate to keep best contact with whatever surface you happen to be vacuuming on. So you dont have to worry about your floor being scratched! You can read more about it here -

Hope this helped.

Certainly! As long as your vacuum has a carpet/hardwood floor setting.

yes, you can vacum a floor, but make sure the suction area does have a protective material around it to provent scratching. Also, a follow up with a Swifter is best. Swifter's Rock!
