I am going to be spending only 1 afternoon in Key West, FL. I've perused the websites about things to do and can't decide.
What 1 or 2 things do you think are the "must see" things that I should be sure to see/do in my limited time there?

The boat we are going on drops us off in Key West by 12:30 in the afternoon and we have to re-board by 5pm. So I truly have a very limited time window.
I thought of driving, but with only 6 days in Florida, driving 5.5hrs each way was a bit too much for this trip.
I'm already planning to go back to Key West for a few days next time we go to Florida.

that's not really a big window. sounds like you are taking a cruise??? if so, i guess you aren't really worried about getting lunch? if you are getting lunch there, try kelly's, i like that place. or mangoes. or anywhere that is original to the island. stay away from hardrock cafe. though, buffett's place might be fun to go. stop somewhere for a key lime pie for sure! the bars are interesting. one of the popular ones is hogsbreath, they have a little shop, get some sauce. something fun would be to rent bikes (not even scooters)...and just ride around town, stopping wherever interesting. we did that one time. it was pretty fun. southernmost point is a great picture opportunity. mallory square is interesting, though only best around sunset (which you will miss). i always get some key west aloe, at the key west aloe place...great for burns. there's some historic places, hemingways, curry mansion, and the audubon house. there's several places. you can probably see a lot on bikes. and of course, there's plenty of shopping on duval. have fun!

Key West is an amazing place! If you go down to Duval Street you will find many different bars, restaurants, and shops to explore. You will not be disappointed! You can also rent scooters or mopeds to get you from place to place, the traffic is crazy! I would not recommend trying to drive, you are unable to drive on Duval Street anyway. If you ever get the chance to go back for a few days I would highly recommend checking out the Eden House. You can do a search on the web and take a virtual tour. It's a mansion which has been turned into a hotel and is absolutely amazing!!! =) Have a wonderful time!

wow that is a tough one. I think that you should most defiantly seethe Hemingway house. It is neat and the 6 toed cats are cool. Make sure you take the tour. You should also visit Sloppy Joe's, it was Hemingway's favorite place to drink. You will fine that out on the tour. When they moved the bars location ( sloppy Joe's) He took the Urinal it is at his house, used as a watering dish for the cats. Trust me the story is good. The other must do is the Conk Train ride through the city. It would be your best set to see the town and get a good over view. One other thing I think you have to do is the Pier It is called Malorey Square at night. There are some really neat acts that are done ( fire shows, cat jugglers, magic....ect.) They have art, food and drink as well. Key west is a great place to visit, but you should come back for a real stay.

we spent 5 days in the keys and it was alot of fun, but Key West was the best. Shopping down the main street, Duval St, is great and depending on your taste what else to do. The bars are fun. If you are going to be there at night, go to the drag show. It is the best. Also if you like off color, there is a bar called the Garden of Eden, you must go up to see. Another fun place to be. Dont forget to go to the southern most point. I was disappointed because they had put fake people around it, but oh well. OOOO and also, which i know you said you were only going to be there one day, but the best sunset is from the 7 mile bridge, not Key West. I know you will have fun, take lots of pic. Oh yea, if you like bikers, go to Hogs Breath, they also have a live web cam you can be on. Oh, i got my pic made with the Outlaws. It was sooo cool. Oh, by the way, hubby and i rode our bikes from NW Georgia all the way down the East coast side to Key West. WOW what a trip *S*

It depends on what you like to do and if you have kids, etc. If you do than there is a good aquarium with tours, pirate museum, Mel Fischer's treasure exhibit and a tour of the island on the "conch train", but the ONE thing that you cannot miss is the sunset from Mallory Square. Have fun!
